Mosquitoes

Liam discovered that there are at least 100 trillion mosquitoes in the world. He also adds that mosquitoes can detect us from 40 yards away. Isn't that cool?

Fireflies

Erin learned that firefly eggs take 3 months to hatch. She also adds that a firefly's glow is not hot, it is cold. Julia researched that a firefly's glow is brighter in warm weather and that only certain kinds of fireflies glow.

Ants

Will discovered that a farmer ant only carries one leaf at a time into it's home so that it won't collapse. He also adds that ants help clean up a lot of the messes that humans leave behind.

Praying Manits

Timothy learned that a praying mantis has wings. He also discovered that there are different types of praying mantises such as the Dead Leaf Mantis, Asian Flower Mantis , and the African Flower Mantis.

Butterflies

Katie learned that some butterflies, like Monarch Butterflies, migrate to escape cold weather. Mahika adds that butterflies can live all over the world.

Ladybugs

Sienna discovered that it takes about 3000 ladybugs to protect an area of land. Isabele adds that a ladybug can be read, yellow, or orange. Madelyn says that ladybugs eat the pests that damage plants in your garden. Kayla learned that the enemies of a ladybug are spiders, birds, people, and ants. Nicole noticed that ladybugs eat soft insects. Lastly, Sonia adds that a ladybug can be smaller than a thumbnail.

Dragonflies

Cameron said that when dragonflies are born they spend a part of their life underwater. Wynter learned that the enemies of a dragonfly are birds, fish , frogs, and large spiders. Calvin adds that dragonflies can fly as fast as 35mph.

Bees

Joseph says bees stay in their hive during the winter. Leslie found out that bees live in tree stumps and bee boxes. Macy learned that bees eat pollen and nectar. Ian said that the enemies for bees are a praying mantis and birds. Shane discovered that bees help flowers grow. Evan shared with us that there are more than 10,000 different kinds of bees.

Insects

The children worked very hard in September and October learning about insects and their life cycles. Here are just a few pictures of different projects we completed over the last few weeks.
